◆Discussion Event: Aesthetics and social criticism in East and Southeast Asian Cinema
Chris Fujiwara, film critic, author, and speaker at the monthly lecture series “What Is Contemporary Cinema?” at Athenee Francais Cultural Center.
This event provides an opportunity for everyone to share their thoughts after watching a film together. The discussion will take place in English and will be moderated by Chris Fujiwara, with various special guests also taking part. Informal language facilitation will be available for Japanese speakers.

◆Symposium: Film as Criticism
The Film Criticism Collective was launched at YIDFF 2015. Recently, the collective published Film Criticism Collective 1, an anthology of critical thought on East and Southeast Asian documentary cinema.
This symposium will explore political and social criticism in East and Southeast Asian films. Topics to be addressed in the symposium include formal strategies of critical practice in recent documentary and fiction films; funding and distribution for politically critical films; and the role of cinema as media criticism.
