In conjunction with their exhibition Variation and Autonomy: The Prints of Contemporary Japanese Painters (held from July 25 to August 13, 2024), the Japan Foundation (JF) held a workshop on kitchen lithography, with artists KIMURA Yuka and YAMADA Keiju as lecturers.

In addition to students from four high schools in the NIHONGO Partners program (SMKN 14 Bandung, SMK Bakti Nusantara 666, MAN Bandung Barat, and SMAN Tanjungsari Sumedang), local people from all walks of life participated in the workshop.

Kitchen lithography is a printmaking process based on the principles of traditional lithography but employing materials commonly found in a kitchen, such as aluminum foil, cola, and chocolate. After listening to a lecture, participants worked on their own lithographs. The workshop was a great opportunity for participants to deepen their understanding of the exhibition by creating their own artwork and asking questions of the lecturers.

Participants commented that they had been given an insight into Japanese culture, praising the lecturers for a friendly and interactive event. They also noted that the well-structured and enjoyable format enabled even complete beginners to learn artistic techniques. Many also reported that seeing the exhibition and participating in the workshop heighted their interest in learning Japanese.

Students from Telkom University in Bandung assisted as volunteers at the workshop, and many people from the art world visited the exhibition and interacted with the lecturers and the students of the NIHONGO Partners schools.
