"Sand(a)isles" /Art Project

Directed and Designed by JK Anicoche + Rick Yamakawa

Following research in Manila, Vientiane, Kuala Lumpur, and Tokyo, Manila-based performance-maker JK Anicoche and up-and-coming Japanese architect Rick Yamakawa create an interactive performance. Urban space in Japan comprises "aisles" for going somewhere. This project emerged from the pair's desire to discover and make "isles" that can be anchored and visited in these aisles. The results radically transform the familiar landscape of the city, presenting insights and inspirations.

Fanglao Dance Company "Bamboo Talk" "PhuYing" /Dance

Choreographed by Ounla Phaoudom and Noutnapha Soydala

Fanglao Dance Company has become a leading presence in the Lao dance scene not only for the striking symbiosis of traditional dance and hip hop styles in its work but also due to its efforts to organize workshops and festivals. For its first performances in Japan, the company presents two works : "Bamboo Talk" is a male dance duet exploring the culture of Southern Laos through breakdancing, traditional martial arts, and an old kind of Lao singing called mor lam, while "PhuYing" features three female dancers employing both classical and hip hop dance styles to convey the reality of women in Laos today. "Fanglao" means to "listen to Laos." Against the noise of rapid economic growth and modernization in Laos, what can we hear? What do people now feel and sense in their lives? Fanglao Dance Company weaves an honest and fresh meditation on these questions through a unique form of dance culture.

"To To Transfer" / Lecture Performance

The Malaysian artist Okui Lala has continued to pursue dialogues related to migration, movement, and identities. The Japanese artist Asako Taki's practice has engaged with multicultural communities, exploring changes in people and expression. Sharing various interests yet having so far worked with different approaches in their respective bases, the pair now presents a lecture performance that brings together closely knit communities. Over 2.6 million people living in Japan today have roots outside the country. From Japan to "home" and back again to Japan, what these people move across borders is not only their bodies or language. This lecture performance examines the various "things" that cross the sea, from money to daily necessities and gifts, through the flow of international logistics. Unweaving the individual stories that lie behind each and every object, a new cultural vista appears.

"Soft Play" /Video, Music and Performance

Directed and Performed by Akihiko Taniguchi

From "a throw of the dice" (2018), a real-time simulation of the titular act in which different scanned landscapes each from a previous throw appear on the screen depending on where the die lands, to "The Big Browser 3D" (2016), in which a large three-dimensional browser is viewable by controlling an avatar of the artist, the new media artist Akihiko Taniguchi's sharp and witty work strives to redefine the border between the real and the virtual. He here presents his first ever theatre work, especially created for F/T. This new piece combines two types of places : a children's soft play area, which is made entirely from soft materials, and a virtual space, which is designed as a simulation of reality. Into this environment appears Taniguchi's avatar, controlled by the artist himself. His unique take on a theatre "performance" that does not require a specific place, let alone an actual body, questions our assumptions and the possibilities of the medium.

The Asian Arts Media Roundtable is an international meeting of arts editors, publishers, reviewers, journalists, critics, bloggers, podcasters, videocasters, and arts-makers from Southeast Asia, East Asia, and Asia- Pacific. Launched by the Southeast Asian arts and culture site Arts Equator (www.ArtsEquator.com), the inaugural event was held in Singapore in May 2019.

Lisa Ahmad

Lisa Ahmad graduated from Chelsea College of Arts. She founded Kaleidoscope Studio with the aim of developing the arts in Brunei, supporting a wide range of visual, performance, and literary artists. She has also recently organized exhibitions, music events, and other projects with a focus on social and environmental issues.

Sasapin Siriwanij

Sasapin Siriwanij is an actor, director, and producer who started working in the theatre while studying at Chulalongkorn University. As a core member of B-Floor Theatre, she is active widely at home and abroad. She has worked as a director since 2013. Her recent output includes "OH! ODE" (2017), for which the Theater Critics Association Thailand awarded her the Best Performance by a Female Artist. She has helped organize numerous international projects and is currently artistic director of Bangkok International Performing Arts Meeting (BIPAM).
