Sanriku International Arts Festival 2019 "Sanriku×Asia Tsunagaru Project" Dialogue with the future, Sanriku and Indonesia

The Japan Foundation Asia Center will hold the "Sanriku International Arts Festival (SAN Fes)" from 9th of February to 24th of March in 2019 together with co-organisers, Sanriku International Arts Promotion Committee and Japan Contemporary Dance Network at the coastal area of the Sanriku region that stretches out over 600 km. To further connect the Sanriku region with Asia, 5 collaborative projects called, "Sanriku×Asia Tsunagaru Project" will also be held during the festival. During the projects, various cultural exchange events will be carried out.

One of the Sanriku×Asia Tsunagaru Project is called "Dialogue with the future, Sanriku and Indonesia." This project invites Indonesian people from Aceh, touring through the disaster areas of the Great East Japan Earthquake and will interact with local people. And we hold the symposium by people from Ache and Tohoku to have dialogue for the future beyond region and time.

Contents Contemporary artist Atsushi Kadowaki will make portrait videos of Indonesians in Kesennuma and exhibit installation works. What on earth are Sanriku, Japan, or Indonesia through their eyes? This project will be the first step to expand the exchange to people living in Sanriku.

Contents All the projects will be one in this meeting. Disaster areas of the Sumatra Earthquake in Aceh in 2004, Indonesia, and the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. We share the same experience of earthquake disaster and have dialogue for the future beyond region and time.

The day before the exchange talk meeting, we will hold an exchange party (see Project 4) to make Oshiruko and Mie Aceh (Aceh's specialty fried noodles) while watching the videos introducing Otsuchi Town and Aceh.

Art Tour "Knowing someon's thinking makes your world wider: Anywhere Pintu Walking in Sanriku"

Contents People from Aceh, affected by the Sumatra Earthquake make a tour through the affected areas of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Those who greatly differ in their cultural backgrounds meet each other in areas where they experienced the similar earthquake disaster. They rediscover their own societies through each other's eyes. It will spread their world. "Pintu" means "entrance" in Indonesian language. The art tour that started in Aceh in 2017 grows to an exchange between Aceh and Sanriku, aiming for long-lasting exchange for the future.

Cycling and Exhibition "Sanriku and Aceh, 200 km Cycling"

Contents Contemporary artist Atsushi Kadowaki at the age of 50 next January will ride his bicycle 270 km from Sendai via Kesennuma to Otsuchi. In Kesennuma, he will visit Indonesian people of the project "Indonesian in Kesennuma." He finishes his cycling at Otsuchi Cultural Exchange Center "Oshacchi." The bicycle will be on display at the Center with the route map etc. People and landscapes encountered by cycling will be edited to a film later and screened in various places.

Contents Children of Kesennuma and Aceh jointly paint large paintings on the theme of 15 years later. The paintings will be exhibited at the Ruins of the Great East Japan Earthquake Kesennuma City Memorial Museum (Japanese only), which opens on March 10, 2019.
