IBUIBU BELU: Bodies of Borders
(C) Michael Tae

TPAM – Performing Arts Meeting in Yokohama 2020 from February 8 to 16, 2020, will have various performances that reflect the latest currents of performing arts in the world. This time, marking its sixth year of Asian focus, TPAM will revisit and re-question the nucleus of performing arts: physical expression. Some outstanding pieces selected by guest directors specializing in dance will be offered.
Here are brief introductions to two pieces from TPAM's official lineup of performances, TPAM Direction. Do not miss this special occasion, where you can experience cutting-edge contemporary performing arts from across Asia and the globe all gathered in Yokohama!

nothing's for something
by fieldworks / Heine Avdal & SHINOZAKI Yukiko

fieldworks / Heine Avdal & Shinozaki Yukiko have been exploring site-specific projects that transform various non-theater places into thrilling performative spaces. In TPAM2020, they will have the Japan premiere of their original productions.
In nothing's for something, the choreography of the body, objects, drawings, sound and light explores the "affects" that exist between the body and what surrounds it. It articulates the transitions of space and time from one "state of being" to another, aspiring to make the invisible visible.

IBUIBU BELU: Bodies of Borders
by Eko Supriyanto

IBUIBU BELU: Bodies of Borders is the culmination of Indonesian dancer and choreographer Eko Supriyanto's two years of research into Likurai, which is a dance tradition in the island of Timor. Through his exploration of movement, rhythm, songs and textile traditions, Supriyanto makes manifest how Likurai dance carries the kinship of people who are now divided by borders separating East Nusa Tenggara and neighboring Timor-Leste. These memories are embodied in the five dancers, one of whom originates from East Timor, and their lived histories as expressed in Likurai, paradoxical proof that bodies challenge political boundaries while at the same time remaining restricted by them.
